Two causes:

  1. New information (including H+ forecasts and propaganda) are evaluated based on how well they fit the existing worldview (myth) - 'confirmation bias'
  2. Arguments aren't evaluated logically, but using individual "commonplaces" (e.g. "nature avenges for us violating it"). No matter how rigorous and complex the rational argument for H+ is, it can be destroyed using one single such commonplace.
