In politics transhumanist issues are hardly ever disscused, and when they are, they never take the transhumanist perpective into account (fear-based position instead).
So one of our aims should be to bring transhumanist issues into the mainstream political process.
Current issues
Some current transhumanist political interests are:
- Euthanasia in a way that preserves the brain (suitable for cryonics)
- Approval for enhanching drugs, streamlining the regulatory process, and subsidising drug development.
- Science funding and positive regulation
- Research direction (science is already politicised...)
- Rights to enhancement, and rights for posthuman sentinence.
- Space regulations and investment
- Long-term environmental issues
Future issues
And in the future:
- Retirement- and pensions-related changes
- Basic income?
- Different methods of governance and economics suitable for greater production capabilities (abundance-based economy) or greater intellegence (greater than the free markets or great enougth for most citizens to accuratley know their intrests on issues)
Most political parties agree that science is good, and have positive plans for it in varying degrees, but they don't touch the other issues.
Possible strategies
Ways of influencing the political process include:
- lobbying (due to our movement small size this may not work)
- Starting a political party, this would be hard to get of the ground.
- Joning and subverting or splitting with a major political party.
- Influencial institutes, the foresight institute is a good example of this.
- Public awareness, by media coverage
Lobbying has potential because tranhumanist members are fairly involved. And joining a political party and causing a split seems to be the way most succesfull partys start, unless they have a social movement already in place. Just changing present party approach to tranhumanist issues will be a succsess, whether they steal our policies, or are subverted by tranhumanist members.
Some of the greatest ways to cause change in politics is to get elected as a right winger and advocate left wing reforms or vise versa. This gives you most of your party's normal support base, and most of your opponents. Some of the greatest changes have been affected this way.
Examples
Eudoxa
Eudoxa gives briefings to European parlamentarians and they try to get influence there in a systematic way. They are trying to nudge politicians in the right direction.
