People fear our ideas. This happens in stages:

Fear of death. That prevents them from even considering immortality, because it makes them think about death.
Fear of boredom. Once they can fathom the idea of living forever, they are scared by its immense magnitude. They are afraid of eternity.
Fear of change. Once they realise that to leave forever is to change forever, they are scared of that change. Transhuman development is fearful, they can't easily accept the Singularity/posthumanity consequences.
